Summer care tips for cats

It has been so long I haven’t written a pet post. So this one is for all the feline babies.

With the temperature rising it becomes important to keep your feline buddies cool and calm. Heat strokes and dehydration is a major concern in cats during summers.

These summer care tips will help your cat stay cool and sail through summers.

1. The most important – NEVER leave your pet in a car (especially in summer months). The temperature in the closed space shoots up very quickly and it can lead to a heat stroke.
2. Open the windows for some time during the day to let in fresh cool air.
3. Give your cat plenty of water. You can add a few ice cubes to the water bowl as well. You can also place water bowls at various spots in the house.
4. Don’t leave your cat in a hot room or in direct sunlight for extended period of time.
5. Leave the air conditioner or fan on in your cat’s room.
6. Avoid the harsh sun and try and keep them indoors as much as possible.
7. Fill in cool water in a hot water bottle and let your kitty lie next to it. It will instantly provide a cooling effect.
8. If your cat loves walks, make sure these are done during early morning or late evening to avoid the heat.
9. Check their paws. The hot tar from the roads can get embedded in between their toes and cause pain and roughness.
10. Summers are the season for ticks and fleas. Keep an eye on your cat. If she is scratching a lot it can be a flea infection.
11. Grooming is very important in summers. Using dry shampoos is a great idea when you cannot give your cat a bath.
12. Your cat’s appetite may get affected in summers. Talk to your vet and he/she might suggest some liver tonic.
13. You can give your cat frozen peas as treats and chilled watermelon.
14. If your cat loves to spend time outdoors, make sure there are plenty of shades.
15. Senior and overweight cats are very sensitive to heat. Thus, it becomes all the more important to keep them in a cool place.
